Reporting The Geotechnical Technologist for Mining on the Horizon Oil Sands Project reports to the Geotechnical Field Engineer.
Role The Geotechnical Technologist will be responsible for observing and documenting earthworks construction procedures as well as identifying and classifying soil types, undertaking soil compaction testing and obtaining samples of fill materials. They will conduct their quality control tasks and provide the information to the Geotechnical Field Engineer. The Geotechnical Technician must be capable of undertaking geotechnical investigations, logging soil types, install and monitor instrumentation and perform laboratory testing and provide the information to the Geotechnical Field Engineer.
Responsibilities Specific responsibilities for this position include are but not limited to: - Becoming thoroughly familiar with the 1. Horizon Oil Sands Project Facies Classification 2. Project Inspection and Testing Manual 3. Plans and Specifications - Using procedures defined by the Inspection and Testing Manual for testing, obtaining and handling samples. - Obtaining reliable test results in accordance with the Inspection and Testing Plan - Preparing daily Written Reports to the Geotechnical Field Engineer regarding status and results of geotechnical investigations, testing and inspection - Providing input to geotechnical quality assurance reports. - Completing tasks within agreed schedule and hours. - Maintaining thorough field records on the project developments. - Documenting all conversation on project matters. - Developing and maintaining a positive rapport with project management, engineering and operations crews.
Location and Duration The position is based on our Horizon Site located 80km north of the town of Fort McMurray.

Required Skills Requirements for the position are: - C.E.T. certification - Ability to express thoughts clearly both verbally and in writing (grammar, spelling, organization, speaking ability, etc) - Ability to prepare complete and well organized field report - Performing calculations that are consistently accurate - Ability to work on non-routine technical assignments with engineering supervision. - Ability to work safely and effectively in the field without direct supervision, in the presence of heavy mining equipment. - Able to accurately classify soils in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) - Familiarity with routine earthwork field and laboratory testing procedures including nuclear density testing, moisture content measurement, grain size analysis, Proctor Maximum Density measurement, and Atterberg Limit determination - Experience with slope indicator monitoring, and measurement of groundwater levels using all types of piezometers - Competence at running computer software for word processing and spreadsheet calculations.
