Business OverviewSuncor Energy Inc. pioneered the development of Canada’s oil sands using surface mining techniques. But of the estimated 300 billion barrels of recoverable bitumen (heavy oil) contained in the vast Athabasca deposits, only about 10 per cent is accessible through surface mining.In-situ technology gives Suncor an additional way to tap into the potential 11 billion barrels of oil on our Athabasca leases, adding to the growing production from our traditional mining operations. Our in-situ development activities support the long-term goal set out in Suncor’s growth strategy: to double our current production of petroleum products to reach a total of 500,000 to 550,000 barrels per day by 2010 to 2012.Firebag: Using a technique called Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), we are injecting steam into deep oil sands deposits through underground wells.
