POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision the Fibre Optic Splicer provides moderately complex work in fiber optics installation and maintenance, including performance and fusion splicing and testing. Ensuring the quality of buried and aerial optic facilities by overseeing the end result of contractor and/or in-house work and performing activation related duties.

Responsibilities
  • Provides quality construction service surrounding the Company values
  • Conducts regular field inspections of buried and aerial fiber splicing layout to ensure work quality control and adherence to technical specifications
  • Communicates with customers, employees, peers, management, utility company representatives, contractors, owner, governmental agencies and the public
  • Assists in the development of splicing plans and estimates future use of the fiber plant
  • Documents the work process by submitting daily reports of completed work
  • Maintains continuing construction and layout guides to ensure work quality control
  • Ensures the timely completion of work and the adherence to quality guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Must have inside plant experience
  • Experience with 10 MEG/100 MEG
  • Ability to communicate in person and by telephone
  • Excellent hand and finger dexterity to carry and to use tools and equipment as necessary
  • Excellent vision ability: close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires
  • Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder, (approximate. 28 ft high and 75 pounds)
  • Ability to exert up to 100 lbs of force in order to shift or move equipment
  • Ability to climb poles using gaffs, hooks and climbing belt as needed
  • Ability to work while standing 70 - 90% of the time
  • Ability to work under hazardous condition such as working at heights
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to outside weather conditions
  • Ability to drive Company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Advanced understanding of all fiber optic test equipment such as fusion splicers, OTDR, optical power meters
  • Ability to engineer fiber optic telephony and cable design
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful deadline situations
  • Ability to work early morning shifts
  • Basic knowledge of construction equipment such as jackhammers, compressor power equipment, extension ladders, aerial lifts
  • Motivated self starter, capable of good productivity with minimal supervision
  • Planning, scheduling, and organizational skills that demonstrate capability to direct and supervise third party labor
  • Uses small hand tools, power tools, meters, and other test equipment
  • Appropriate valid driver’s license and a good driving record
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively
  • Ability to work independently and with others
  • Ability to comprehend and operate appropriate testing equipment (e.g., SLM, signal leakage detector, TDR) to fulfill job requirements
  • Ability to comply with all Company implemented safety procedures
  • Advanced skills in using a Windows-based computer
  • Field construction experience with fiber, cable, telecommunications or line equipment preferred
