POSITION SUMMARY

SCOPE:
Reporting to the Manager, Tailings Engineering, this role is pivotal in the development of practical and cost effective tailings plans as well the pond performance. The focus of this role is short range planning for Tailings. In order to develop and successfully communicate plans, the Engineer must be confident collaborating with professionals from all areas of the project.


KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
Develop a weekly tailings plan with Mine Operations and Bitumen Production that is published and presented at the weekly production meeting. This plan will include:
• Forecast tailings line usage
• Required overburden placement for dyke construction
• Identified projects for dyke operations (e.g. pumping, line moves)
• Critical tailings issues
• Reconciliation with previous week plan


Prepare three month plans that include:
• Volume, mass, and water balances
• Line locations and phasing
• Fluid elevations and required dyke elevation forecasts
• Equipment changes and schedules
• Causes and impacts of any deviations from the previous three month plan
• Action required to resolve any deviations from plan
• Key performance indicators


MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Lead development of Operations Manuals for tailings facilities, in conjunction with geotechnical engineers, mine operations, and bitumen production
• Maintain orderly data of tailings facility operations as necessary for operations and regulatory compliance.
• Conduct and document regular inspections of tailings facilities such as ditches, ponds, debris control systems, and deposition facilities
• Prepare quarterly reports for regulators on tailings facility performance
• Plan, manage and document twice yearly pond sounding and sampling programs.
• Accompany regulatory inspectors during site inspections, exchange information, discuss deficiencies, recommend plans to address any non-compliance issues, and enhance relations.
• Implement plans for wildlife protection at tailings facilities
• Implement project execution plans for special projects for tailings facilities as required, and identify and address deviations from the plan, schedule, and budget


QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• B.S.C.E with specialization in tailings engineering, mining engineering, or related fields
• At least three years experience in mining or related fields
• Previous experience completing tailings design projects
• Accurate in all calculations
• Experience with spreadsheets and mine planning software as required to complete assigned tasks
• Proficiency in costing and scheduling
• Able to complete well organized and concise engineering reports


Personal Qualities:
• Communicates effectively by expressing thoughts clearly both verbally and in writing
• Works safely and effectively in the field without direct supervision, in the presence of heavy mining equipment
• Focused and able to initiate work on non-routine technical assignments with little or occasional engineering supervision
• Able to take initiative on site by drawing on your field experience.

• Comply with all Health and Safety Requirements established by Canadian Natural Resources Limited
• Know and comply with all regulations and legislative requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for the Province of Alberta and environmental standards
• Follow safe work procedures and ensure all personnel comply;
• Report any injury or illness immediately;
• Report unsafe acts and conditions;
• Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and is worn where and when required.
