Function/Purpose:
The Recreation, Parks and Culture Department is currently recruiting for a Facility Maintenance Specialist for the GH Dawe Community Centre. The successful candidate will provide a safe and comfortable environment for all users of the facility. The role of the Facility Maintenance Specialist is to be in charge of the operation and maintenance of the multifaceted recreation and leisure facility. The Dawe is currently undergoing a major revitalization and expansion and this position will be a liaison with the general contractor while that process is being completed. The Dawe arena will be in operation for the 2009/2010 season with ice activities commencing in October. The Facility Maintenance Specialist will be in charge of this component of the facility while construction on the remainder of the complex is completed. The successful candidate is responsible for supervising facility operational staff and must have excellent leadership skills.
Job Requirements:
- Grade 12 (High School Diploma) or equivalent
- Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel (RFP) certifications Swimming Pool Operator II, Arena Operator II and Building Maintenance II
- 5th Class Power Engineering Certificate of Competency.
- Certification in First-aid, C.P.R. and WHMIS Valid Class 5 driver's license.
- Able to pass RCMP Security Check.
- Two years experience in building maintenance of a public facility which includes customer relations and staff supervision. *Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

- Ability to be self-motivated and work with considerable independence in a team environment.
- Ability to deal with people in a firm and tactful manner, and to act with sound judgement under pressure.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to exercise care when using typical pool chemicals such as chlorine and Muriatic acid.
- Knowledge and experience with typical business software.
- Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices and principals.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate inventory and facility use records, and to perform basic arithmetic calculations both manually and on computer.
- Ability to perform routine carpentry, painting, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general “handyman” duties.
- Ability to operate and use various tools.
Specific Demands of the Job
- Exerts moderate physical effort on occasion and works in all types of environments – closed spaces, chemical storage areas, HVAC and other building system rooms, refrigeration plants and humid pool areas.
- Required to work shifts.
- May be required to adjust hours of work to accommodate special events and other uses scheduled at the facility.
- May work alone in the facility in accordance with the Working Alone policy.
- Occasionally exposed to risk of chlorine and ammonia in the course of performing daily tasks and may be required to use Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
Affiliation: CUPE
Hours of Work: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, based on a 40 hour work week. Adjusted hours of work on evening and weekends to accommodate special events and/or maintenance and repair at the facility.
