POSITION SUMMARY

Function/Purpose:


The Recreation Department is looking for energetic, responsible individuals to fill various positions as Lifeguard/Aquatics Instructors at various City facilities including the Recreation Centre, Michener Pool and the Collicutt Centre.


Duties will include:


Instructing aquatic lessons for children, youth, and/or adults.


Evaluating class participant performance.


Maintaining a safe environment for customers and staff in and around the water and at the leisure centre.


Preparing lectures, evaluations, progress cards, time sheets, routine reports, seasonal statistics, evaluations and assessment sheets as required.


Interacting with staff and supervisors to keep current on new techniques.


Willingness to participate in the applicable in-service programs.


Maintaining instructional equipment used during lessons.


Performing other related work as required.


Maintaining a clean, safe and enjoyable facility.

  • Ability to exert physical effort demanded by swimming, pulling patrons from the water, and cleaning.

  • Ability to handle public relations responsibilities effectively and thoroughly and to be firm and tactful in maintaining Water Park discipline and to respond calmly to emergencies.

  • Ability to maintain continuous alertness and attention when lifeguarding and to recognize potential problems.

  • Exceptional customer service skills.

  • Demonstrated high level of verbal, written, and listening skills.

  • Proven leadership skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all patrons, lifeguards and instructors.

  • Ability to maintain skills at the National Lifeguard Service Standard.

  • Ability to work in full view of the public, and stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work in conditions which may be noisy and mildly unpleasant when using disinfectant and cleaning up after patrons.

  • Ability to work shifts.

Notes:



  • A criminal background check is a condition of employment, and successful candidates will be required to complete a criminal background check through The City of Red Deer’s Human Resources Department.

  • All awards must be kept current according to certifying organizations standards.

  • Where appropriate, applicants may be required to participate in job specific testing



Hours of Work:


4 - 30 hours per week, Sunday - Saturday. Shifts vary based on facility operating and programming hours. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays is required.
