SCOPE:
This is a unique opportunity to be involved in the early stages of a brand new Oil Sands operation. As an integral member of the multi talented Mine Geology group, the Mine Geologist will collaborate in a broad range of geological disciplines, experience exciting professional challenges and work on diverse projects within all areas of this department.
KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Produce detailed and accurate surface and isopach maps for characterization of the Geology. • Ensure and provide accurate information that will be the basis from which the 3D models of the geological areas will be created • Support operations by providing accurate geological data to the Engineering department
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide support to the Geology group in areas of geological modeling and data base projects • Administer and manage the annual drilling program • Work with core logging group to amend or adjust any aspect of the program to better suit the needs of the operation • Participate in the Core Logging Quality Assurance with regards to: Ensuring proper core description Data is entered into the data base correctly Reviewing the data to ensure that it makes sense • Create cross-sectional maps of areas of geological or mining production importance • Look at cross-sectional maps and assist in creating 3D models using MineSight • Interact effectively with the field personnel and contractors that will be drilling the cores • Provide weekly and monthly updates on the progress of the Core Q/A to the Lead Geologist
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION: Education & Experience: • Bachelors of Science in Geology or Geological Engineering • A minimum of 3 years experience working on a drilling program, preferably in Oil Sands • A minimum of 3 years experience of field experience including core descriptions and field mapping • Previous experience working in a mining or heavy industry environment • Stratigraphy and Sedimentology education and/or experience • Familiarity with the Athabasca Region would be an asset. • Recent field experience demonstrating modeling and database skills with Mine Sight and Acquire would be an asset.
