SCOPE:
This position will primarily be responsible for providing accurate geological information to the mine planning, geotechnical engineering, and mine/plant operations groups at the Horizon Oil Sands Site. As a team member of the Mine Geology group, the geologist will participate in a broad range of geological disciplines.
KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Assist in setting and implementing production objectives. • Communicate relevant Geological information to Mine Planning and Mine Operations to maximize ore delivery. • Report field observations to the Geology Team to improve modeling procedures.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Reconcile production volume between survey surfaces and reported tons from dispatch. • Update and provide plan and section maps which show the ore characterization properties of the ore body. • Conduct grade sampling of the pit and any rejects produced by the plant. • Work with geotechnical group to assist with material classifications. • Assist with the planning and implementation of on site geological investigations as required to advance the development of the operation and improve the geological model.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION: Education & Experience: • Bachelor of Science in Geology or Geological Engineering • A minimum of 5 years experience working as a geologist in an Oil Sands or Coal facility • A minimum of 3 years stratigraphy/sedimentology education or experience • Previous experience working in a mining or heavy industry environment would be an asset • Familiarity with geology of the Athabasca Region would be an asset • Recent field experience demonstrating modeling and database skills with Mine Sight and Acquire would be an asset. Personal Qualities: • Big picture thinker with ability to think in 3D • Well organized and able to prioritize competing requirements • Excellent verbal and oral communication especially when interacting with operations and field personnel • Ability to meet tight deadlines
HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT: • Comply with all Health and Safety Requirements established by Canadian Natural Resources Limited • Know and comply with all regulations and legislative requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for the Province of Alberta and environmental standards • Follow safe work procedures and ensure all personnel comply; • Report any injury or illness immediately; • Report unsafe acts and conditions; • Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and is worn where and when required.
