The successful candidate will work within a multi disciplinary team that is focused on executing Canadian Natural’s growth strategy for SAGD operations in the McMurray formation. Reporting to the Exploration Manager - Athabasca, the thermal geologist will be responsible for the following:
•Perform detailed geological mapping of thermal oil sands assets leading to optimal development projects •Communicating key geological concepts to team members and senior management •Provide technical review and leadership in land strategy discussions •Provide input for areas of future technical development within the department •Take a lead role in the planning and drilling of horizontal well pairs, in order to maximize SAGD performance •Participate in the planning of a long term growth strategy for the McMurray formation; •Provide input on regulatory documents •Mentoring junior professional staff in both their technical and professional business development
Candidates should have 10+ years of experience working at an upstream oil and gas production company. Post graduate studies and direct involvement in McMurray SAGD operations would be an asset. Technical qualifications include a working knowledge of clastic sedimentology and stratigraphy. Technical innovation, expertise and leadership along with solid planning and organizational skills are critical for success in this role. Excellent interpersonal skills are a must as is a demonstrated ability to take on ever increasing levels of responsibility.
In addition, preference will be given to geologists with good computer skills and are experienced in drilling horizontal wells. Experience with Accumap, Petra and Petrel would be helpful.
