POSITION SUMMARY

SCOPE:
As a working supervisor, the Lead for Environmental/Regulatory will manage a team of professionals to meet compliance requirements for the Horizon Oil Sands site. This role will be instrumental in paving the road for Horizon’s environmental and regulatory future. Working together with Engineering and Operations teams throughout the site, the Lead will have the opportunity to shape the direction of this developing environmental group.


KEY AREA OF CONTRIBUTION:
• Meet all environmental regulatory compliance requirements including approvals and legislation for operational planning and implementation
• Lead and mentor a team of environmental professionals
• Management of all impacts to water, land and air emissions


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Provide environmental support to engineering and operations teams for the site in meeting approval requirements, managing compliance permits and providing information on environmental concerns
• Plan and implement environmental monitoring system for wildlife, surface water and air
• Coordinate the reporting of monitoring results to the appropriate agency
• Communicate release events to regulatory bodies and ensure appropriate follow up for release events is completed
• Respond to environmental emergencies
• Management of environmental consultants and contractors conducting work on site
• Advise site management and contractors on environmental issues based on Canadian Natural’s Environmental Management Plan and Environmental Operating Guidelines


MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop strong environmental sustainability standards for the project, working with internal and external stakeholders
• Develop and maintain budgets
• Ensure regulatory compliance through audits, inspections and issuance of control procedures
• Support Regional multi-stakeholder initiatives of CEMA, WBEA, and RAMP through active participation in their activities and in coordinating the activities of other professionals
• Develop plans for ongoing and potential future issues related to the project
• Prepare for and escort environment and regulatory government agents on site
• Coordinate on common issues with environmental personnel in Canadian Natural’s Conventional Operations


QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
Education & Experience:
• 10+ years environmental experience
• Work experience focused on Alberta Oil Sands including water and terrestrial resources is preferred.
• A Degree in a Natural Science discipline
• Complete understanding of Provincial and Federal regulatory requirements
• Environmental field experience and a familiarity with the regional environmental issues would be an asset

HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT:
• Comply with all Health and Safety Requirements established by Canadian Natural Resources Limited
• Know and comply with all regulations and legislative requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for the Province of Alberta and environmental standards
• Follow safe work procedures and ensure all personnel comply;
• Report any injury or illness immediately;
• Report unsafe acts and conditions;
• Ensure Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and is worn where and when required.
