Diavik Diamond Mines (DDMI) owns Rio Tinto's interest in and manages the unincorporated Diavik diamonds joint venture in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Mining takes place in the lake bed at Lac de Gras with water held back by a dike made of rock fill. With approximately 800 employees, Diavik is instrumental in making Canada the world's third largest diamond producer by value. Diavik has won awards for its sensitive management of environmental and community issues.

Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Business Improvement, the Specialist, Business Improvement will work at the Lac De Gras Mine Site on a two (2) weeks on / two (2) weeks off rotational basis with a pickup point within the Northwest Territories. The incumbent is responsible for acting as a support resource or as a project leader for Green Belt projects at Diavik, as well as driving and supporting the business improvement approach which delivers sustained business value through identifying, capturing, maintaining and leveraging improvements in business performance.

Key aspects of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and supporting lean boards;
  • Supporting Greenbelt in project selection and project definition;
  • Providing support for coaching and supporting business improvement practitioners;
  • Serving as a technical authority and resource on a project by project basis;
  • Identifying and implementing initiatives to improve safety, productivity, quality and costs at the mine site to ensure DDMI competes effectively in these areas when compared with similar operations;
  • Coordinating and implementing design and planning for projects, ensuring designs meet project requirements and applicable codes, and can be brought to fruition within desired budgets and schedules;
  • Preparing, maintaining and controlling standards, reports, drawing manuals and asset inventories for the project;
  • Identifying and prioritizing energy related continuous improvement projects;
  • Reviewing energy consumption, consumption patterns and monitoring systems;
  • Contributing to planning and scoping of capital projects with specific emphasis on energy efficiency;
  • Coordinating DDMI responses to both external and internal GHG programs;
  • Coordinating DDMI responses, consultant assignments and preparing reports/recommendations related to alternate energy resources (wind/hydro).

Above all, the successful candidate will be one whose #1 priority is safety in the workplace. The incumbent will hold a Bachelor's degree in engineering, business administration or equivalent, along with a Six Sigma Greenbelt certification. Experience in mining and industrial operations will be considered an asset.
