Diavik Diamond Mines (DDMI) owns Rio Tinto's interest in and manages the unincorporated Diavik diamonds joint venture in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Mining takes place in the lake bed at Lac de Gras with water held back by a dike made of rock fill. With approximately 800 employees, Diavik is instrumental in making Canada the world's third largest diamond producer by value. Diavik has won awards for its sensitive management of environmental and community issues.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Environment and Sustainable Development, the Supervisor, Environment will work at the Lac De Gras Mine Site on a two (2) weeks on / two (2) weeks off rotational basis with a pickup point within the Northwest Territories. The incumbent is responsible for undertaking sampling activities required by DDMI environmental monitoring programs, preparing and assisting others with the development of related reports and advising contractors and employees on environmental issues to ensure that DDMI meets applicable environmental standards.

Key aspects of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting urgent, daily, weekly, and quarterly environmental sampling related to regulatory requirements as outlined in DDMI permits and licenses and DDMI monitoring programs.
  • Preparing and reviewing written instructions for related technical procedures.
  • Preparing graphs, data, tables, and reports as required assisting the Environmental Manager to complete and submit regulatory reports and meeting requests for information by regulatory agencies.
  • Performing weekly compliance inspections to identify environmental issues on site.
  • Monitoring specific site issues daily as directed by the Superintendent and advising as required.
  • Advising DDMI's site contractors on environmental issues to ensure compliance.
  • Providing information to assist the Superintendent and DDMI staff and contractors in order to meet legislative requirements and resolve environmental issues.
  • Developing and conducting environmental monitoring education programs to ensure operational teams and departments understand their role in environmental issues.
  • Educating operational teams about the new Health, Safety & Environment Management System (HSEQMS).
  • Facilitating the implementation of DDMI environmental management plans.
  • Supervise and develop site Environmental Technicians including daily advice and assistance; information on environmental monitoring programs, issues, and tasks and related site requirements; and reasons for the importance of quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC).
  • Coordinating DDMI environmental contractors when they are on site and providing assistance as required.
  • Maintaining the environmental management filing system at the site office including updating digital (HSEMS) and paper files daily.
  • Retrieving all report submissions quickly and easily when required.
  • Participating in regulatory inspections that occur at site and attending various regulatory meetings in Yellowknife as requested.

Above all, the successful candidate will be one whose #1 priority is safety in the workplace. The incumbent will hold a degree in Environmental Sciences and have more than three (3) years of experience. Experience in environmental monitoring and in mining and industrial operations will be considered an asset.
